It seems that flexibility is the order of the day in the field of web-based project management software, and Project Insight's design team sure has understood that concern. This clean-looking project management tool has pushed customization very far, allowing account holders to completely adapt the system to their organisational processes.
The interface itself is exactly what it should be: intuitive and discrete, so the user doesn't notice it really. He or she simply uses it without a second thought. This is a refreshing change from flashy interfaces that often tend to confuse the user. Project Insight's creators focussed on making an effective system, and it shows.
Once logged in, a user is shown tasks to do, tasks to manage and other tasks assigned to him or her. An interesting function has been added to the search box: changes since the user has logged in or since he or she has logged in last time. This is useful to be kept up to date.
Options, whether they are administrative, user preferences or project parameters, are numerous and highly customizable. We were most impressed by a detail of the expense reports: it is possible to log both the cost (burden) and the billing rates of a contractor or any user. Moreover, several companies or sub-contractors can be added to an account, with both contact and billing information. This is useful for expense reports, where it becomes easy to see if the project is profitable.
We also liked how user rights were designed. Not only are they highly detailed; they are very easy to sort through. For each user, company or group of users, one can decide who speaks to whom. For example, a sub-contractor or the client can only have access to a project manager. The same flexibility is available for email notifications: alerts can be sent upon task changes or a nightly email report can be produced on selected task changes and parameters.
Project options and parameters follow the same logic of customization: administrators can decide to show or hide links (for example email alerts), which item types to allow (messages, tasks, articles, for example), even how tasks are displayed (tree-view or list). This makes Project Insight a system that truly and completely adapts to an organization's structure.
We were highly impressed with the wide range of reports available, either task-based or project-based. Reports can be exported to Excel, sent to a printer-friendly page and, of course, customized in several useful ways.
Add a searchable help file, a personal calendar and importation from MS Project and you have the perfect project management tool for organizations that like things to be done just so. Overall, Project Insight is an excellent tool where you can tweak each little detail to your liking.
